In the last decade, we silently agreed to a massive trade-off. We gained the convenience of "access anywhere," but we lost the certainty of ownership.
Most modern writing apps are "Cloud-First." This means your data is stored on a server by default. Cloud-First gives you ease of access on multiple devices and reduces the risk of data loss if your device has issues.
Toolis is different. Toolis is Local-First. Your data is always offline, and only put to the cloud when you desire.
True Ownership
When you use Google Docs or Notion, you are renting space on their computers. You are essentially writing on rented land.
With Toolis, your files are yours. They live on your hard drive, in simple, future-proof formats (.md). You can back them up to a USB drive, email them to yourself, or sync them via iCloud/Dropbox if you choose to. But the master copy is always in your pocket, not in a data center.
Privacy by Design
We don't know what you are writing, and we don't want to know.
Because there is no central database, there is no target for hackers. There is no algorithm scanning your drafts to serve you ads. Your journal, your novel, your manifesto—it stays private by default.
The Future is Offline
We believe the pendulum is swinging back. We are tired of subscriptions, tired of downtime, and tired of losing control. Local-first is not a step backward; it is a step toward resilience.
